Earthquakes in the Western Quebec Seismic Zone in 2000

Goal of the report	This report descibes the earthquakes recorded by the seismograph stations of the Western Quebec region between January 1st and December 31, 2000.
Performance of the local network	The Western Quebec Seismic Zone is monitored by 9 seismic stations: MNT (Montréal, Québec), TRQ (Mont-Tremblant, Québec), WBO (Williamsburg, Ontario), GAC (Glen Almond, Québec), OTT (Ottawa, Ontario), GRQ (Grand-Remous, Québec), CRLO (Chalk River, Ontario), SADO (Sadowa, Ontario) and EEO (Eldee, Ontario) These stations belong to the Canadian National Seismograph Network. The uptime for these stations was very acceptable in 2000, ranking over 90%. However, stations GAC, WBO and TRQ underwent breakdowns which sometimes reduced their performance under the 90% mark. Data from this station is continuously archived on optical disk Taking into account the distribution of local network in the Canadian network, any event with magnitude 2.0 or higher would be located.
Recorded earthquakes	About 150 earthquake were recorded as shown in the map(the epicenters are circled in yellow or red if the magnitude is >= 3.0) and described in the list. Besides some isolated and low magnitude events, the large majority of them occurred inside the recognized Western Quebec seismic zone. Two earthquakes exceeded 4,0 on the Richter scale: 1st of January 2000, magnitude 5,2, close to Témiscaming 6th of August 2000, magnitude 4,2, close to Lac Nominingue The most significant earthquake of the year was the earthquake of Témiscaming on January 1st 2000 magnitude 5,2. This earthquake was the subject of some Communications in scientific congresses: Adams, J., Bent, A., Drysdale, J. A., Halchuk, S., Lamontagne, M. Ma, S., Wetmiller, R. J., Woodgold, C., and Dastous, J.-B., 2000. A more indepth description of the characteristics of this earthquake is presently being produced. A scientific article should be published in 2001.
Felt earthquakes	According to the reports of citizens and journalists, nine of these earthquakes were felt locally.
Blasts	Numerous blasts were recorded but are not shown in the map and the list above.
Induced earthquakes	No earthquake induced by the water level variations was recorded during the time period.
